About this podcast
The Golden days of Radio is presented by Don Kilgour, a retired Radio and Television announcer and sports broadcaster
from Shepparton, Victoria, Australia.
Don grew up in the Victorian country town of Katamatite and loved listening to the local commercial and ABC radio stations.
The Golden Days of Radio looks at radio particularly through the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s with a brief look at the commencement of the medium in the 1930’s.
The program looks at the changes that Radio made to people’s lives and how Radio became an integral part of the community.
It looks at the importance of national and world news to country folk along with the entertainment and educational value of the programs to children, the serials so loved by women whilst they did the housework, the family time as everyone gathered around the open fire to listen to the serials and quiz shows on the wireless and sports events that enthusiasts could listen to at home instead of having to travel long distances. Names like Dad and Dave, Smokey Dawson, Biggles, When a girl marries, Portia faces life, Bob Dyer, Jack Davey, Dexter Dutton and Blue Hills come to life in the Golden Days of Radio.
The commercial side of Radio was of great importance and it looks at how Radio announcements about products and services came about. Above all Radio took advantage of instant reporting that brought the News of the World directly into people’s homes much quicker than Newspapers.
The golden Days of Radio is about the imagination that the radio sparked in people’s minds when they listened to news, situation programs and sport. It also comments on the changes the medium had to make with the introduction of Television.
Take a trip down memory lane with the Golden Days of Radio.
